Associate of Applied Science in Medical Billing and Coding

A mother of two young boys, Teresa Martinez wanted a career that would allow her to work from home. Already having earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial design from the University of Washington, Martinez became interested in YVCC’s Medical Billing and Coding program while helping her husband study for one of his medical assisting courses. She enrolled in YVCC’s program in the winter of 2014. “The team of Allied Health instructors have been very helpful and attentive, and our class material has been practical yet challenging,” stated Teresa Martinez. “I know that there are various online programs that teach you about medical billing and coding. Even so, I also know that YVCC provides invaluable hands-on experience during the externship portion of the program, as well as positive guidance from instructors who are currently in the field. This is something that can’t be substituted. I know that as a future YVCC graduate, I will stand out from a sea of students because of my certifications and experience. I am very thankful YVCC offers this program,” she continued.

Returning to school also provided Teresa the opportunity to continue playing soccer. “Soccer has been a part of my life since I was small. It has influenced my life as far as the jobs I’ve held and people I’ve met. Most of my friends I’ve met through soccer, and many of them have played for YVCC. I even met my husband on a soccer field!,” she stated. “I knew about Coach Peter Monahan because he used to coach soccer in Toppenish. I had heard from various people that under Coach Monahan’s direction, the soccer team had improved drastically. He had helped create a highly competitive and successful soccer program, and I wanted to be a part of that,” she concluded. Martinez plans to work from home with her medical billing and coding experience. She hopes to continue to design in her spare time and continue coaching for Toppenish Middle School’s program.
