Associate in Business

Eva Chavez Suarez was born in Colima, Mexico. Growing up she did not place a lot of value on education and often did the bare minimum to get by in her classes. Following high school she began delivering newspapers and washing cars in her hometown. In 2005, Eva moved to the United States in hopes of finding better economic opportunities. She began working in the Lower Yakima Valley in agriculture. “I worked in the fields for a few years,” stated Chavez Suarez. “The work was very physically demanding and hard for me to do. During this time I asked myself if I wanted to work in the fields for the rest of my life and really started to understand the value of education,” she continued. With the hope for a better life, she began attending YVCC’s English as a Second Language (ESL) program. Continuing on with her studies she transitioned from ESL to Adult Basic Education (ABE). With the support and knowledge gained in YVCC’s ABE program Eva was ready to tackle college-level coursework. “Without YVCC I don’t think I would’ve been able to pursue education. There are many resources here on campus which help students succeed,” she concluded. Eva completed her associate in business degree in June 2013.
