Erica Libenow grew up in Vancouver, Washington. Following high school, she began her educational journey at Clark College. After a relocation for her husband’s career and the birth of their first son, Libenow decided to take an extended break from her studies. As the years passed the couple welcomed five additional sons. When the youngest began kindergarten last year, Libenow decided to return to school. She began taking courses in the spring of 2016 and is currently finishing her pre-requisite courses, which are required for entry into YVC’s Nursing Program.

“I have a longstanding passion for helping people to be healthier, as well as advocating on behalf of others as they navigate the healthcare system,” stated Erica Libenow. “I believe I can make a positive difference as a nurse, and someday as a nurse practitioner,” she continued.

Over the summer, Libenow learned she was the recipient of the Veteran’s Club Scholarship. The Veteran’s Club fundraised during the 2016-2017 academic year to establish a scholarship award. Starting out as a 50/50 raffle, club members raised $500 toward the scholarship award. Through the generosity of faculty and staff, the original scholarship amount was matched, bringing the award to an even $1,000. Thankful for the support, she states, “Aside from the benefits of financial support, I was humbled and honored to be chosen for the scholarship. I know that the group put a tremendous amount of effort into fundraising in order to provide the scholarship, and I am committed to making sure that they are pleased with their investment in my education.”

In 2015, she was elected to serve a six-year term as commissioner for the Kittitas County Hospital District #1. “Healthcare is my passion, and I am grateful for the opportunity to serve my community this way,” she continued. She also volunteers at the Yakima Union Gospel Mission’s medical clinic.
After completing her pre-requisite courses, she hopes to enroll in YVC’s Nursing Program. Ultimately, she hopes to earn her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree.
